I am about to do some thing that is very had to admitt. I can't stop smoking on my own. I'm powerless over that God awful addiction and I've got to accept that fact.
I started smoking at 8 in East L.A. I went to a school where 60% of students were Mexican, about 30% were white and 10% were black. If you wanted to be cool, a dude, you smoked, wore J.C. Penny "Towncraft" T-Shirts with a Pendelton Wool Shirt, with only the top 3 buttons buttoned. jeans and black shoes.
I quit 2 yrs later when we moved to the farming town of Huntington Beach. There were only 16,800 people in 20 sq mile area. 1 High School and 3 K-8's. One Alpha Beta Farmer's Market and one theatre and bowling alley. Wasn't much of a town.
The only thing to do was swim, skim board and surf. Play in the oil when the tankers had spills. Be chased by private and police patrols if you were on the beach after cerfew.
Sunco Oil Company owned all of the oil around H.B., we used to go up to a pump horse and trip the electrical switch and run up to the top. Some one would turn it on and we would ride until we saw a patrol. Not good activities to do if you are smoking. I stopped.
In the Military, they used to say smoke 'em if you got 'em. All the rest of us went on Policeing Patrol. Pick up every single piece of junk that doesn't look natural. Pick up every piece the DI's threw on the ground from the class before. Didn't take long to learn to smoke, again.
After the Army I started swimming, again and gave up smoking. And, I don't believe I smoke from then until I became a daily drinker, a drunken bar fly. I even smoked after I got sober.
I started taking classes at a local college and took a lot of P.E. clases and stoped smoking until I got hit by a drunk driver.
I tried to go back to my job full time and I could not take pain pills so, I "bummed" a smoke from a friend who had also served in vietnam. He questioned me about it and I told him the truth and he gave me a smoke.
That mis-direction of some type of mind altering drug called nicoten is the most addictive stuff ever. I can not beat it own my own.
My psych at the va is always telling me to just call and she'll have the patches sent out. I think it's time to learn how not to start.
I know some of you must have gone through this and I could use some help.
I'm at the point where I don't even like the taste. I only hit a cig enough to get a fix and throw it away.
If some one has been through this, please, help

Well, I'm doing it. I got my patches from the doc to help me quit smoking. I bought my last pack on Wednesday and I ran out of smokes today. That's 4 days to smoke 1 pack of cigs. I'm ready to quit. Pray, not wish, for me. I'll need all the help I can get. Thanks every one.

This is a bitch. I thought the patches would stop the craving for a smoke. It takes alittle while for the nicotine to get into your system it's tough.

The hardest thing, just like every other addiction, is not to take the 1st one. Not having a smoke in the morning is hard but I'm still sticking with the patches.

Yea! I went to Vancouver and went into a Cuban Cigar shop and did not buy one! For me that's nearly un-thinkable. I love Cuban's they're the only cigar I smoke and for me to pass one up is truly something new.

Maybe I'll do it this time, I mean stop.
